About Sam Concepcion
Without a doubt, Sam Concepcion’s origins helped shaped his current path in the entertainment industry. Born to theater actors who once performed at the Metropolitan Theater, it seemed only natural that his first foray into the performing arts would be through the stage, landing a spot at the age of five at a worship cantata. This eventually led to a number of early stage performances from 2002 to 2004, most notably young Rizal in Sino Ka Ba Jose Rizal?; Edmund in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Mushu in the Song of Mulan, Wendell in Peter Pan and the Time Machine, and the Prince in Ragnarok.
It wasn’t until 2006 that Sam would enjoy popular acclaim when he won the Big Division of Little Big Star, taking a whopping 52% of the votes, besting even the then young and would be international star, Charice. As to be expected, his compelling win opened a slew of opportunities, and for the next few years, Sam would weave through recording work, television roles, hosting and endorsements while still maintaining a presence in theater.
The next five years following his winning contest run would prove to be his golden era. His most notable high points include a 2007 Gold record certification for Sam Concepcion; a series of television roles from 2007 to 2011; a 2008 recording for Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Fighting; and one of his most celebrated roles, Peter Pan in 2011. He would also go on to be honored with, among other citations, the UNAP Outstanding Youth Leader award in 2009, and a Famas German Moreno Youth Achievement Award in 2011.
It was perhaps because of his clean cut, high achieving image that Sam’s early work went beyond entertainment, having been tapped for ambassadorship or representative roles for various organizations. Sam became a Get Caught Reading Ambassador for the National Book Development Board in 2007, a Youth Role Model and Spokesperson for the Department of Education in 2008, an official spokesperson for the B4USurf campaign of the Business Software Alliance in 2008, and a World Vision Ambassador for Children in 2008.
2012 onward would usher in a new era for a then young adult Sam. Despite changes to his timbre and tone, he would continue to prove his mettle, taking Platinum certification for the single Mahal na Mahal in 2013 and 2x Platinum in the same year for Dati with Tippy Dos Santos. Sam would eventually win four Awit Awards in 2014.
His young adult years would see him in more hosting and television roles, including a stint as MYX VJ in 2013, and a series of dramatic TV roles for Maalaala Mo Kaya from 2013 to 2015. He would also dip into more movies, I Do Bidoo Bidoo in 2012, and Kimmy Dora in 2013.

Perspective
I once spoke to a local social influencer who watched I Do Bidoo Bidoo on a whim, and while the movie didn’t exactly tickle her fancy, she gushed with admiration over Sam’s talent. It goes without saying of course, that I shared her enthusiasm, which is part of the reason why I decided to set up this site in the first place. I thought Sam, and many other Filipino singers, was grossly underrated and had to be seen and heard more.
I must admit though, that when I first set out to put together Sam’s profile, I balked because there was just too much material to go over. For a man who, at this time of writing, hadn’t even hit thirty, it seemed he had done and achieved enough to fill a lifetime. That, I suppose is some indication of how accomplished he is as an artist and performer.
That said, anyone who has faithfully followed Sam’s body of work, and his transition from a child performer to an adult artist will realize, he and his voice have evolved. Fans must begin to appreciate this adult version of him. That shouldn’t be too difficult to do. He is still every bit a consummate performer, wonderfully entertaining to watch.
Praise for the Artist
Sam, tonight, I understand, why they call you certain things. Artist to artist, I give you my respect, sincerely from the bottom of my heart. There are many talented people, not everyone is of the rare kind. You are.
